Description
Structural rehabilitation of the Webster Avenue double-leaf trunnion bascule bridge over the Chicago River, performed by HBM as a subconsultant to WSP.

- Comprehensive rehabilitation of an existing double-leaf trunnion bascule bridge; HBM served as a subconsultant to WSP in collaboration with CDOT
- Existing structure: total length 291 feet 3 inches; overall deck width 60 feet; carries one eastbound lane, one westbound lane, one westbound turn lane, and two sidewalks over the North Branch of the Chicago River
- Movable span superstructure: 5-inch steel grid deck on rolled steel stringers, built-up steel floorbeams, and two half-through trusses; substructure of reinforced concrete piers and abutments supported by timber piles
- Document review and field inspection; Bridge Condition Report (BCR); Type, Size, and Location (TS&L) Plans; review of rating calculations for existing stringers and floor beams; detailed final repair/rehabilitation plans
- Scope of work: deck and sidewalk replacement (movable and fixed spans); expansion joint construction; stringer and floorbeam replacement; truss and bottom lateral bracing repairs; steel cleaning/painting; railing replacement; live load bearing repair/adjustment; bridge balancing; concrete structural repair and epoxy crack injection; replacement of damaged dolphins and fender/pier protection system; retaining wall repairs; bearing pedestal replacement
