Description

Demolition procedure for the original 43rd Street Bridge as part of the larger pedestrian bridge replacement program connecting Bronzeville to the Lakefront.

HBM's Scope

Scope of Work

  • Demolition sequencing over Lake Shore Drive and rail
  • Lakefront protection planning
  • Demolition plan for the 43rd Street Bridge over the Metra/ICRR Railroads and South Lake Shore Drive in Chicago; commissioned by F.H. Paschen in collaboration with Omega III
  • Two bridges: Bridge #1 — three-span continuous steel truss over the railroads; Bridge #2 — two-span continuous two-girder steel bridge over Lake Shore Drive
  • Span-wise removal west to east (Bridge #1 Spans 1, 2, 3; Bridge #2 Spans 4 and 5) over three consecutive night shifts with full track and road closures; de-energizing of catenary power lines; wind-speed limitations; steel treated as potentially lead-painted with decontamination units
  • Equipment: LR 1400 Crane; 118K Excavator (CAT 349, 345, or equivalent); 87K Excavator (CAT 336, 330, or equivalent); 40K loader. Structural analysis performed using SAP2000
